Renal
The elimination of metabolic products and helping to regulate the amount of water in the body allows the kidneys to maintain the proper chemical balance of the body. Important substances that the kidneys help regulate include sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium. The right balance of these substances is crucial. When the kidneys are not working properly, the levels of these substances in the blood may be abnormal, and waste products and fluids may build up in the blood to dangerous levels, creating a life-threatening situation.
A number of health conditions and diseases can damage the kidneys. The most common causes and major risk factors for kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure.
The individual tests included in the Kidney Panel may vary from lab to lab, but typical tests performed include Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Phosphorus, Calcium, Albumin, Urea, Creatinine or Glucose as a source of energy.
