URIC ACID
Uric acid is a final product of purine metabolism. It is produced in the liver and excreted in the urine. Elevated concentration of uric acid (hyperuricemia) is usually caused by gout, leukemia, diabetes mellitus, hyperfunction of thyroid, renal failure, renal calculosis, toxemia of pregnancy, increased intake of purines in the diet. Uric acid concentration in serum and in urine depends on glomerular filtration, thus is useful for renal function monitoring.
