The iron binding capacity is used to monitor and aid in the diagnosis of iron deficiency. Exceeded values of IBC can be associated with iron deficiency, sideropenic anemia, acute hepatitis. Increased values of IBC can be observed in pregnant woman as well as in woman using oral contraceptives. Decreased values of IBC can be associated with hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis, anemia of chronic diseases or neoplastic and renal diseases.
