CYSTATIN C
Cystatin C (CysC) is a low-molecular-weight non-glycosylated protein. Determinations of cystatin C level in serum and plasma are used to assess the filtration function of kidneys. Increased cystatin C level is related to the impairment of the glomerular filtration (GFR). Monitoring cystatin C concentration allows to assess the kidney function in patients taking nephrotoxic drugs, patients diagnosed with cirrhosis, rheumathoidal arthritis or patients after kidney transplantation, and also qualify patients with chronic renal failure for renal replacement therapy. Reduced cystatin C values may be affected by taking glucocorticosteroids.
