CHOLESTEROL
Determinations of cholesterol level in serum and plasma are mainly used as an aid in assessing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. High levels of cholesterol may indicate hypothyroidism and can also lead to a stroke. Decreased concentrations can occur in hyperthyroidism, in advanced cirrhosis and other severe liver parenchyma injuries. Low values of cholesterol may be also observed in sepsis and cachexia.
