CHOLESTEROL
Cholesterol is essential structural component of cell membranes and precursor of bile acids and all steroids hormones. Determinations of cholesterol level in serum and plasma are mainly used in diagnosis and prediction of the risk of cardiovascular diseases. High levels of cholesterol may indicate hypothyroidism and can also lead to a stroke. Decreased concentrations can occur in hyperthyroidism, in advanced cirrhosis and other severe liver parenchyma injuries. Low values of cholesterol may be also observed in sepsis and cachexia.
