ALPHA-1-ANTITRYPSIN
Determinations of α-1 antitrypsin concentration in serum and plasma are mainly used as an aid in diagnosis of liver and lung diseases. Αlpha1-antitrypsin deficiency can lead to emphysema or liver cirrhosis. One of the causes of the deficiency is a hereditary AAT deficiency.
Alpha1-antitrypsin belongs to the acute phase proteins and its concentration increases rapidly in inflammation and trauma. Increased levels of this protein in the blood are also observed during pregnancy, estrogen therapy or taking oral contraceptives.
