The current standard for diagnosis of infection with SARS-CoV-2 is rRT-PCR test. However many studies proving that routine laboratory examinations reveal a number of abnormalities in COVID-19 patients. Mortality among patients with severe COVID-19 could be significantly reduced by early identification and timely treatment of critical cases. Some inflammatory (procalcitonin, CRP), hematological (lymphocyte, Thrombocytes), and biochemical (ASAT, ALAT, CK-MB, LDH, D-dimer, γ-GT) biomarkers are significantly associated with severe COVID-19. These biomarkers might help in prognostic risk stratification of patients with COVID-19. In some countries, biomarkers such as CRP, PCT, lymphopenia, and IL-6 and IL-10 are already being used to aid diagnosis or to provide early evidence of more severe disease progression.
