PROCALCITONIN
Procalcitonin (PCT) is a 116 amino acid polypeptide, the precursor of calcitonin (CT). Under physiological conditions, calcitonin is produced exclusively in the C-cells of the thyroid gland through specific intracellular proteolysis of PCT. Determinations of procalcitonin levels in serum and plasma are used to diagnose and monitor bacterial infections including antibiotic therapy monitoring. It is also used as an aid in diagnosis of sepsis. Increased procalcitonin levels can be observed in fungal infections, SIRS syndrome, severe burns, mechanical injuries, myocardial infarction. High values of procalcitonin may also occur in autoimmune diseases, malaria, acute pancreatitis.
