LIPOPROTEIN (a)
Lipoprotein (a) is a variant form of LDL that has extra protein chain attached. Determination of Lp(a) concentration in serum and plasma samples is intended to assess the risk of developing cardiovascular disease in patients at risk and to monitor the risk of atherosclerosis. Increased lipoprotein (a) concentration is associated with increased risk of premature coronary artery disease and stroke. It is also found in case of narrowing of the cerebral arteries, uncontrolled diabetes, hypothyroidism, chronic renal failure, and nephrotic syndrome. Low Lp (a) concentration is observed in malnutrition or chronic liver diseases.
