GAMMA-GLUTAMYLOTRANSFERASE
Gamma-Glutamylotransferase (GGT) is an enzyme primarily found in liver. Determination of GGT activity in serum or plasma is mainly used as an aid in diagnosis and monitoring of acute and chronic diseases of the liver, bile ducts and pancreas. A significant increase in the activity of the enzyme is observed in such liver diseases as: cancer, alcohol damage, cirrhosis, inflammation (both acute and chronic). It is also a sensitive indicator of inflammation of the bile ducts or the gallbladder. Measurement of GGT activity is used to monitor abstinence in alcoholics during drug addiction treatment and to monitor the hepatotoxicity of drugs in chemically treated cancer patients.
