FERRITIN
Ferritin is an iron storage protein found primarily inside cells. Determinations of ferritin level in serum are used to assess iron stores, mainly as an aid to diagnosis iron deficiency, differentiation the type of anemia and control iron supplementation. Measurement of ferritin concentration is also helpful in detecting the loss of iron reserves in the state preceding anemia and in dialysis patients.
Elevated ferritin values are not only related on the amount of iron. The concentration of ferritin also increases in inflammation, during infection, in cancer and liver diseases, as well as in hemochromatosis, with iron overdose and after blood transfusions. A decreased ferritin level is observed in anemia due to iron deficiency and in latent iron deficiency.
