COMPLEMENT C4
Complement is a group immunologically distinct proteins present in blood and tissues. They are able to interact with antigen-antibody complexes, with each other and with cell membranes, in a complex way intended at destroying viruses and bacteria. Determinations of complement C4 level in serum and plasma are mainly used as an aid in the diagnosis. Low concentrations of complement C4 may be associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), deficiencies in cryoglobulin-associated vasculitis and in some form of Sjögren's syndrome with secondary complement activation. A chronically low concentration (not fluctuating or not detectable) may indicate a congenital deficiency of this factor.
